Hey team,
How’s it going?
This is one of my favourite YouTube Creators Damien Talks Money:
He’s got 176,000 subscribers
And his first YouTube videos got 500,000+ views
He’s now one of the most trusted personal finance Creators
How did he do it?
And can you do the same?
Let’s dive in:
1/ Long Tail keywords
Coming up with YouTube content ideas is tough.
How do you know what your audience REALLY wants?
Turns out there is a science to it.
Tools like VidIQ & Tubebuddy will tell you what people are searching for.
This can set you up for success from day 1.
Damien breaks it down:
If you don’t want to sign up to those tools:
Use an incognito browser
Search a keyword in your niche
See what the top searched questions are
Create a video addressing these topics
Result!
2/ Time to react
Long tail keywords will get some momentum behind your channel.
Now you can aim for a big breakout video.
How can you give yourself the best odds?
Reactive content!
Reacting fast to trending topics is what will get you on the YouTube home screen.
How do you stand out?
Condense down.
Damien explains: “People want somebody to do the research for them and just say ‘here’s what you need to know’.”
So, make sure you are:
Keeping up with news within your niche
Doing your research (so your audience don’t have to)
Breaking that research down into short, digestible points
Adding in your own thoughts to keep it fresh
3/ Keep it evergreen
Sometimes reactive content flops.
How can you protect against that?
Evergreen content baby!
If you’ve got a bank of evergreen content on your channel, you can afford to have some flops with your reactive.
Damien aims to make 4 evergreen videos a month.
This then feeds into a bigger picture:
To keep content evergreen, Damien will go back through past content and update it each year to keep it relevant.
TASK: Go through your own channel and see what titles need updating
4/ Content is King
Let’s rewind to Damien’s video that went viral 3 years ago now.
It’s nothing fancy.
So why did it do so well?
Because the value is top tier.
Damien isn’t a gatekeeper.
He educates his audience
He provides well researched, relevant information
He takes time to build a clear script that’s easy for viewers to grasp
People love him for it.
Damien’s not a fan of shoving “Like and subscribe” down people’s throats within the first 10 seconds of an episode.
“It’s so overdone and once people zone out they’re gone,” he says.
People don’t come back because he’s demanded they do so.
They come back because he delivers every time.
Can you say that you’re doing the same?
5/ Find your focus
Which one is better:
Being everywhere
Or
Focussing on a few key areas that offer the most reward
It’s a no-brainer, right?
For Damien, this means backing away from short form content.
“It’s hard to make money from short form,” he says. “And just because the content is short that doesn't mean the production is.”
You might have cracked the recipe for creating viral shorts on YouTube.
But if the monetisation is pants, is it sustainable?
Before you start something, ask yourself:
From day one, can I make money from it?
6/ Look beyond your niche
“My competition is Netflix and the Missus,” says Damien.
What does he mean by this?
Damien isn’t competing against other finance YouTubers.
Or other YouTubers.
Or other content creators.
It’s bigger than that.
He’s competing against anything else asking for your time.
Think about your own target audience.
What do they like to do?
Watch films.
Go out for meals.
Spend time outdoors.
Whatever it is, you need to make sure your content is getting there first.
This means:
Ok… that’s a wrap!
What do you think?
